Wake up Chicagoans, we are living in one of the highest taxed locations in the country (think of the taxes, parking fee's, sales, income, head-tax, real estate, RE stamps, fees, city stickers, etc) - and we have no where near the money we need to pay the massive pensions coming due in the next 5 years! Where do you think that money will come from? Answer = you (higher fees, taxes, RE taxes, etc). This will cause people to flee our great city, driving away businesses, and causing even more taxes to be paid with a ever shrinking city population. Jobs in Chicago will rapidly drop as we jam taxes up ever higher and businesses flee (don't be looking for our state govenor to give you a tax break like Catapillar, etc got - those 'special deals' are what you get to pay for with ever higher taxes!).

Our suggestion to the Mayor is....
Two choices, either we make massive changes to cut expenses, or we allow the business community and bond markets to do it for us by demanding ever higher interest payments that require higher taxes to pay for (think Greece) and businesses fleeing our City in droves.

Don' t believe were in trouble? Yet more evidence....
(1) After income tax 67% jump, Today 1/20/12 -> State says it has no where near enough money still!

(2) Investors demanding more interest rates for Chicago and Illinois Bonds...

(3) Chicago's Credit rating cut (granted its a 2010 article, but recent rumblings don't look good....)

I would suggest that property taxes could be drastically reduced if the Cook County Assessor and the City of Chicago would crack down on the owners of illegal conversions. We have literally thousands of single family homes in Chicago which have been illegaly converted intom 2 and 3 unit apartments which creates parking congestion, higher enrollments in the local schools (causing overcrowding), higher costs associated with the collection and disposal of garbage, overtaxed water and sewer systems and a general degradation of our neighborhoods in general.

Owners of these properties collect rents for which they pay no income taxes, and are taxed on the basis of a single family home. These owners also ilebgaly claim Homeowner Exemptions on multiple properties and in many cases do not even live in the buildngs they own and collect exemptions for.

It would not be difficult for the County Assessor to run a computer search to identify the property owners who are taking Homeowner Expemtions on multiple properties. These owners should be prosecuted for fraud and heavily fined. The IRS should also go after illegal income for which there are no Federal of State income taxes collected.

The honest, single family owner/taxpayer is getting screwed because his neighborhood is declining and his taxes are going up at the expense of these illegal apartments and the owners who fail to pay taxes.
