This picturesque style, popular in the 1880s and 90s, is found in almost every city and town in the United States. Buildings in the Queen Anne style have asymmetrical shapes characterized by bays and prominent, varied rooflines. In Chicago, it was used for many houses and commercial buildings, with concentrations found in Hyde Park and Lakeview. Common characteristics are:
- rich but simple ornament
- variety of materials, including wood, terra cotta, stone, and pressed metal
- expansive porches
- pressed metal bays and turrets
- irregular roofline with many dormers and chimneys
